Patient Story: Kwame

Kwame was aged 6 when he was badly injured in a road traffic accident near Accra in February 2006. He was dragged along the road by a car, exposing the bone in his foot.

Without the appropriate surgery, Kwame was at risk of losing his foot, and severely affecting his health and his future.

In a series of operations at the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit, Kwame’s ankle was repaired. This involved removing the dead tissue and preparing a flap of skin and tissue from his leg to hinge down and cover the exposed injury. Skin grafts were then applied to all the raw surfaces.

A full recovery took place.
